“Millions of children go to sleep cold and scared, waking up with hopes for an end to this brutal war.

The conflict has killed and injured children, and many have lost their parents, siblings, homes, schools, and playgrounds.

No child should ever endure that kind of suffering.”

– Catherine Russell, UNICEF Executive Director

ABOUT MASSANDRA WINERY

A winery in Massandra, near Yalta on the Black Sea, has operated since the mid-nineteenth century.

Initially, the winery was built to supply wines for the Tsar’s Summer Palace, “Livadia,” also located near Yalta.

Consequently,  it catered to every conceivable vinous need of the Tsar.

It provided wines for Church Communion, the Court, social functions, and the Tsar’s personal consumption.

To ensure high standards, the Tsar appointed Prince Lev Sergervich Golitzin to oversee production.

Moreover, Golitzin established the Massandra Collection by retaining bottles of every wine produced.

He also enhanced it with some of the finest wines from around the world.

In 1922, Stalin further expanded the collection by ordering the transfer of all wines found in the Tsar’s many palaces to the cellars.

Then,  just before the Nazi assault on Crimea in 1941, the winery moved all the wine to secret hiding places.

Today, the Massandra Collective continues to produce wine.

In fact, it employs 5,000 people across several member estates that farm 4,400 acres.

Gurzuf is a small town just east of Yalta, where one of the Massandra wineries was established in 1921.
