Dr Barolet and his wines
Albert Barolet, a doctor of medicine who became a wine merchant, passed away in 1969, thereby leaving his estate to two elderly sisters.
Additionally, his father, Mr. Arthur Barolet, had started the business in the early 20th century.
Consequently, the company purchased selected wines from individual growers, which were then delivered en barrique to the cellar in Beaune for élévage.
Afterward, the wines were bottled and matured before ultimately being sold under the Barolet name.
In autumn 1969, a local wine broker took the late Harry Waugh, who was then wine director at Harvey’s of Bristol, to see the cellar.
Following this visit, he subsequently contacted Christie’s.
Moreover, the vast Barolet mansion, located just outside the walls of Beaune, housed thousands of bottles of wine, with vintages dating back to 1911.
Eventually, Henri de Villamont, a Swiss firm with cellars in Savigny-lès-Beaune, acquired the title and stocks.
They then agreed to hold a major sale at Christie’s in order to establish prices.
Ultimately, the sale, which offered the wines ex-cellars Beaune, turned out to be an outstanding success.

The 1934 vintage for Burgundy wines stands out as a very good year, yielding generous reds with ripe fruit and melted tannins.
This was thanks to a favourable spring and a warm, yet not excessive, summer.
That year marked the largest harvest of the decade for Burgundy, resulting in a substantial quantity of wine.
The finest red Burgundies from 1934 are rich and fruity.
