A history of Château Lafite Rothschild

We can trace the estate’s history back to the 13th century.

However, the Ségur family likely transformed it into a significant winemaking estate in the 17th century.

In the early 18th century, Marquis Nicolas Alexandre de Ségur, famously known as “The Wine Prince,” enhanced winemaking techniques and, consequently, built the estate’s reputation, especially in the English market.

Then, in 1868, Baron James de Rothschild acquired the estate, thereby initiating nearly 200 years of family stewardship.

Furthermore, the classification of Bordeaux wines in 1855 recognized the estate’s quality, thus ranking Château Lafite among the esteemed “First Growths.”

Château Lafite Rothschild sits to the north of Pauillac, bordering Saint Estèphe.

Moreover, Lafite’s finest vineyards extend across the 50ha Plateau des Carruades to the west of the Château.

In addition, this plateau, the highest point in the Pauillac appellation, boasts excellent drainage and optimal sun exposure.

Furthermore, its clay-gravel soils regulate water effectively, creating ideal ripening conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon grapes

The 1934 Château Lafite Rothschild stands out as a highly-regarded vintage.

Moreover, critics have given praise to its complex aromatic profile, including notes of cherry, leather, and exotic sweetness.

Additionally, they have also highlighted its elegant, well-balanced palate with fine tannins and a lengthy finish.

Lafite Rothschild 1934 tasting note by Neal Martin

“I have tasted this wine for the second time, recognizing it as one of the best of the decade.

It presents a beautiful nose of red cherry, rose petals, singed leather, and a touch of something sweet and exotic.

Is it blood orange? Dried apricots?

The palate offers medium body, very well balanced with notes of cherry, dried fig, and a citrus-like acidity.

It feels almost Burgundian in texture with very fine tannins, leading towards an elegant finish.

It is just a lovely mature Pauillac wine in glacial descent.”
