Montrachet is an Appellation d’origine contrôlée (AOC) and Grand Cru vineyard for white wine made of Chardonnay.

It is in the Côte de Beaune subregion of Burgundy.

The vineyard straddles the border between the two communes of Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet

It produces what many consider to be the greatest dry white wine in the world.

Four other Grand Cru vineyards surround it, all having “Montrachet” as part of their names.

Many generally consider Montrachet superior to its four Grand Cru neighbours, and this reflects in its higher price.

Tiny, at just 1.65 acres in size and with vines whose average age is 65 years, DRC produces an incomparable Montrachet.

Indeed, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti cultivates its oldest vines here.

Moreover, this wine offers a span of drinkability that is unmatched for white Burgundy.

Montrachet’s reputation is as the greatest dry white wine in the world, thus it has a lot to live up to.

However, this wine always shines, be it at six months from barrel or after 25 years in bottle.

The 1996 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC) Montrachet Grand Cru represents the pinnacle of white Burgundy.

Initially, it has an intensely mineral bouquet underpinned by roasted nuts, candied citrus zest, light toffee, and butter.

Then the palate is exceptionally full-bodied, dense, and well-focused with a silky, layered texture and a long, powerful finish.

Ultimately, the producers created only 3,101 bottles of DRC Montrachet 1996.
