An Art Deco label was commissioned from the poster artist Carlu for the 1924 Mouton vintage.

To commemorate the end of the war, 1945 was the second vintage of Mouton to feature a bespoke label.

Every vintage since, Mouton has enlisted an artist to design a new label.

The 1998 Chateau Mouton Rothschild label was by Rufino Tamayo (1899-1991).

Tamayo was born in Oaxaca (Mexico) into a family of Zapotecan Indian origin.

He became one of the most renowned Mexican artists of the 20th century.

Despite his family’s opposition, his precocious calling took him at an early age to Mexico City, where he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts.

There he discovered with fascination the mysteries and diversity of pre-Columbian art, which inspired all his work.

Unable to share the revolutionary fervour then obligatory among his colleagues, he left Mexico in 1926 for New York.

From then on, his career, punctuated by numerous one-man exhibitions in both countries, divided between Mexico and the United States.

He taught first at the Dalton School, then at the Brooklyn Museum.

In 1990, Tamayo agreed to create an original work of art for the Mouton Rothschild label.

Fate decreed otherwise, but his family wanted to fulfill the master’s wish.

So to illustrate the 1998 vintage, they gave Mouton Rothschild this “Brindis,” a man proposing a toast.

It transforms a commonplace ritual, under a glowing sun, into a striking allegory of raw desire.

Mouton 1998 features an intense and complex bouquet with notes of crème de cassis (blackcurrant), roasted espresso, smoke, graphite, and a hint of mint or dried herbs.

The palate presents full-bodied and densely packed rich fruit flavours like dark berries, leather, and liquorice.

It possesses significant structure with firm, chewy, and “mouth-searing” tannins that soften with age.

It delivers a long, powerful, and persistent finish, with a lingering saline nuance.
