Château Mouton Rothschild – From Marquis to Barons

Château Mouton Rothschild took its present name after Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild acquired it from the English branch of the famous dynasty in 1853.

For many years, despite the increasingly acknowledged quality of its wine, Mouton aroused little interest among its owners.

They were unwilling to make the journey to a then-neglected region.

So it was a red-letter day when, in 1922, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, barely 20 years old and the great grandson of Baron Nathaniel, took in hand the destiny of an estate to which he would devote his entire life.

In 1924, Baron Philippe decided to bottle all the wine at the château.

In doing so, he asserted the role and responsibility of the owners of top growths against the all-powerful Bordeaux wine trade.

Hitherto, the merchants received the wine in barrels.

This decision, soon embraced by others, meant that the château had to increase its storage space.

The architect Charles Siclis designed the spectacular Grand Chai (Great Barrel Hall) at Mouton, which they built in 1926.

The 1934 Château Mouton Rothschild is an exceptional, fully mature red wine from Bordeaux.

Famously, this 1934 wine appeared in the James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun.

Mouton 1934 comes from the best (and largest) vintage of an otherwise difficult decade for Bordeaux.

With the possible exception of Cheval Blanc, Mouton is the best of the ’34s.

It was described by the late Michael Broadbent MW as “Lovely and – for Mouton – relatively low-keyed”.

This vintage of Mouton comes from the era before its bespoke artist labels and only a year before the Comité National des Appellations d’Origine was created to manage and control the region and commune in which a wine was produced.

Mouton ’34 doesn’t appear in Ian Fleming’s 1965 novel The Man With The Golden Gun but it does feature in Moonraker (1955) when James Bond and M are having dinner at Blades:

“’Then what?’ asked M. ‘Champagne? Personally I’m going to have a half-bottle of claret. The Mouton Rothschild ’34, please, Grimley. But don’t pay any attention to me, James. I’m an old man. Champagne’s no good for me.’”

It showcases the estate’s quality and history, representing a transitional era for the château, pre-dating its famous artist-designed labels.

Wine enthusiasts highly regard it as one of the best wines from a challenging decade.

The 1934 vintage produced rich, deep wines, with Mouton Rothschild noted for its longevity and complex tertiary characteristics.

Critics generally praise the wine for its surprising vitality and complexity.

Experts have rated it highly, including 97 points by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate.
