In 1832, M. Laussac-Fourcaud purchased 15 hectares (37 acres) from Château Figeac.

This transformation created Chateau Cheval Blanc.

Then in the International London and Paris Exhibitions in 1862 and 1867, it earned medals still prominent on its labels.

Subsequently, the family retained the château until 1998.

Then Bernard Arnault and Albert Frère bought it.

The late Clive Coates MW described Chateau Cheval Blanc as “the only great wine in the world made predominantly from Cabernet Franc.”

The vineyard area is spread over 41 hectares (100 acres), with 37 hectares (91 acres) planted with a composition of grape varieties of:

  • 57% Cabernet Franc
  • 40% Merlot
  • and small parcels of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon

The 1971 harvest occurred fairly late, lasting from 30th September to 11th October.

Moreover, poor weather conditions during flowering caused a significant amount of coulure.

As a result, the crop ended up small, with yields of just 18 hectolitres per hectare.

Consequently, this meant that Château Cheval Blanc 1971 became very concentrated.

In fact, Château Cheval Blanc probably produced the best wine in Bordeaux in this vintage, which people have somewhat overlooked and forgotten.

Nevertheless, despite a challenging growing season, the vintage produced a concentrated, high-quality wine that experts consider one of the estate’s greatest successes of the 1970s.

Furthermore, experts describe the wine as round and silky, with a lovely impression of sweetness.

In addition, the bouquet presents intense and complex notes of Virginia tobacco, grapefruit, mint, gingerbread, blackcurrant, and wild strawberry.

On the palate, it offers rich fruit flavours (peach, macerated prunes, greengage) and well-integrated cinnamon notes, culminating in an immensely long, velvety aftertaste.

Ultimately, it reaches its peak and provides joy to drink at the present time.
