The harvesters started the harvest much later than usual on 23rd September.

Serge Hochar had been in the U.S. and had assumed that workers would not be able to pick due to intense fighting in the mountains above the Bekaa Valley.

Once word came that the situation had improved, he made his way back, via Paris and Cyprus.

The pickers completed the picking without problems from the weather, despite the grapes being very ripe, almost over-mature.

With the usual route back to the winery blocked, trucks of grapes had to cross the Bekaa and Israeli occupied lines north of the vineyard holdings, during which journey gunfire hit one truckload, thankfully without loss.

Despite all these troubles, the winemakers produced a great vintage.

Due to the advanced maturity of the grapes, 1983 became one of Musar’s highest alcohol wines to date, with some components averaging between 14% to 15% Alc./Vol.

Additionally, it had a higher residual sugar level.

The winery bottled the 1983 vintage in 1987.

You can expect a complex profile of sweet raisins, spices, liquorice, and leather, with “animal” or “meaty” secondary notes typical of Musar.

How best to enjoy Chateau Musar

Chateau Musar reds, bottled unfined and unfiltered, suit vegans.

Moreover, they also possess a richly-textured quality and are likely “throw a crust” and leave sediment in the bottle.

In fact, most fine wines commonly exhibit this feature, and Musar Red vintages over a decade old especially show it.

Ideally, therefore, you should stand the bottles up the night before opening to allow the sediment to settle.

After that, you should carefully decant and then discard the sediment, usually in the last centimetre of the bottle.

Subsequently, you should allow the wine to breathe for an hour.

Finally, serve it best at 18°C with roasts, grills (especially lamb), casseroles, game, and mature cheeses.
