Vintage wine 1980 at Arden Fine Wines – Chateau Musar 1980

Upon release, 1980 Chateau Musar was clearly a delicate vintage, developing much more character than people would have first thought.

A lighter than average style with a rich ruby colour.

Very fresh and clean with a lovely tobacco nose.

The palate developed into an elegant character and ended with a warm, mellow finish.

This is darker and denser that some of the other wines from the 1980s, with typical leaf and cedar scents.

It tastes more of Cabernet Sauvignon than most vintages of Chateau Musar.

Released in 1987.

14% Alc./Vol.

Chateau Musar 1980 today

Though initially considered a delicate vintage upon its release in 1987, it has developed into a “classic heavyweight claret” style with significant concentration and balance.

It has a brownish ruby or a brick-red rim, correct for its age.

The nose is dominated by cedar, tobacco, and leather, alongside typical Musar “animal” or gamey notes.

On the palate, it is elegant and fresh with high acidity.

The flavours include soft cherries, bramble, liquorice, and warm spices, ending in a long, mellow finish.

At over 45 years old, well-stored bottles like these at Arden Fine Wines are still impressive and youthful.

How best to enjoy Chateau Musar

Chateau Musar reds, bottled unfined and unfiltered, suit vegans.

They also possess a richly-textured quality and are likely to “throw a crust” and leave sediment in the bottle.

Most fine wines commonly exhibit this feature, and Musar Red vintages over a decade old especially show it.

Ideally, you should stand the bottles up the night before opening to allow the sediment to settle.

After you carefully decant (and discard the sediment, usually in the last centimetre of the bottle), you should allow the wine to breathe for an hour.

Best served at 18°C with roasts, grills (especially lamb), casseroles, game, and mature cheeses.
