Montrachet is an Appellation d’origine contrôlée (AOC) and Grand Cru vineyard for white wine made of Chardonnay.
It is in the Côte de Beaune subregion of Burgundy.
The vineyard straddles the border between the two communes of Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet
It produces what many consider to be the greatest dry white wine in the world.
Four other Grand Cru vineyards surround it, all having “Montrachet” as part of their names.
Many generally consider Montrachet superior to its four Grand Cru neighbours, and this reflects in its higher price.
DRC Montrachet Grand Cru price 1978
Tiny, at just 1.65 acres in size and with vines whose average age is 65 years, DRC produces an incomparable Montrachet.
These are the oldest vines owned by Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.
The wine offers a span of drinkability that is unmatched in Burgundy.
The 1978 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC) Montrachet stands out as a legendary, exceptionally rare white Burgundy.
In 1978, the winemakers produced whites that were marginally less successful than the reds; however, this was only by a fraction.
Moreover, most winemakers crafted white wines that were rich, ripe, and elegant, with fine aromatics, and the best examples likely had good capacity to age.
Overall, wine enthusiasts agree that it is, without a doubt, a buttery, rich, and opulent wine with intense concentration.
Furthermore, the palate offers honeyed, milky, and creamy sensations, with aromas and flavors of tropical fruit, apricot, walnut, and spice.
Consequently, this wine has fully matured and reached its peak plateau.
Although it does not require further cellaring, well-stored bottles like this one from Arden Fine Wines still maintain excellent balance due to their high acidity.
Ultimately, the producers created only 2,735 bottles of DRC Montrachet 1978.
