Romanée-Saint-Vivant is a Grand Cru vineyard for Pinot Noir red wine in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy.
This vineyard is situated within the commune of Vosne-Romanée.
It takes its name from the Abbey of Saint Vivant, which in Medieval times owned several vineyards among the Vosne-Romanée Grands Crus.
There are several different vineyard owners in Romanée-Saint-Vivant today, although Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is the largest.
- In 1966, the last member of the Marey-Monge family leased the remaining 5.28 hectares to Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.
- Then they gave them an option to be first buyers if the vineyard would come up for sale.
- In 1988, the Neyroud family bought the vineyard, which they had inherited from Ms Marey-Monge.
- Wine from the time when Domaine de la Romanée-Conti leased it, rather than owned it, also has the name Marey-Monge on the label.
Only Grand Cru wines are produced by the Domaine, including this Romanée-Saint-Vivant, made from their 5.28-hectare plot.
DRC Romanée-St-Vivant 1985
This classic red Burgundy comes from a standout vintage.
In 1985, Burgundy enjoyed an exceptionally fine vintage.
Producers made beautifully-balanced red wines in general, and the best examples remain extremely age-worthy.
Esteemed producers like DRC can still offer remarkable drinking pleasure today with their top-tier Grand Crus.
The nose presents mature aromas of forest floor (sous bois), menthol, game, truffle, and iron-like scents.
On the palate, it has a deeper expression compared to the Échézeaux of the same year, featuring flavours of red strawberry, black pepper, and cinnamon.
Overall, the wine still possesses incredible freshness and acidity.
It pairs traditionally with roast duck, goose, or game birds.
In 1985, DRC produced 13,639 bottles of Romanée-St-Vivant.
You can buy it from Arden Fine Wines in London.
