Romanée-Saint-Vivant is a Grand Cru vineyard for Pinot Noir red wine in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy.
This vineyard is situated within the commune of Vosne-Romanée.
It takes its name from the Abbey of Saint Vivant, which in Medieval times owned several vineyards among the Vosne-Romanée Grands Crus.
There are several different vineyard owners in Romanée-Saint-Vivant today, although Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is the largest.
- In 1966, the last member of the Marey-Monge family leased the remaining 5.28 hectares to Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.
- Then they gave them an option to be first buyers if the vineyard would come up for sale.
- In 1988, the Neyroud family bought the vineyard, which they had inherited from Ms Marey-Monge.
- Wine from the time when Domaine de la Romanée-Conti leased it, rather than owned it, also has the name Marey-Monge on the label.
DRC Romanée-St-Vivant 1980
The 1980 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC) Romanée-Saint-Vivant is a rare Grand Cru red wine from an undistinguished vintage.
However, it has aged exceptionally well, outperforming expectations for its year.
It has an elegant and airy bouquet of floral spice, red berry fruit, tea, and soft spice notes.
Some bottles exhibit more tertiary characters like earth, dried flowers, and mushroom.
The palate is fully integrated and silky smooth.
It has round, fine tannins, though some tasters note that it may dry out slightly on the finish.
This indicates that the wine is likely past its absolute peak but it is still highly pleasurable.
It typically shows soft, gentle fruit, mild acidity, and a transparent red fruit character.
In 1980, DRC produced 11,400 bottles of Romanée-St-Vivant.
