The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC) Échézeaux is a highly sought-after Grand Cru red Burgundy from the historic Échézeaux vineyard.

This wine, made from Pinot Noir, stands out as one of the more powerful and robust offerings from the DRC portfolio.

However, it still maintains a sense of elegance.

The Echézeaux vineyard sits on the slopes above Grands Échezeaux, specifically between the villages of Vosne-Romanée and Vougeot.

The soil in the Échezeaux climats (plots) features a more diverse and complex composition than that of Grands Échezeaux.

It consists of Bajocian marls mixed with gravel and alluvial deposits, exhibiting varying altitudes and gradients.

DRC cultivates approximately 4.67 hectares of the Echézeaux vineyard, which spans a total area of about 37.69 hectares.

The majority of DRC’s holdings focus on a highly regarded plot called Les Poulaillaires.

Wine enthusiasts consider the wines from DRC’s Échezeaux plots exquisite examples of top-tier Burgundy.

They showcase bright red fruit, spice, and savoury characteristics.

DRC Échézeaux 1981

The 1981 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Échézeaux Grand Cru is a mature red Burgundy made from Pinot Noir in a challenging vintage.

Overall, this wine is savoury, earthy, and light-to-medium bodied with notes of dried flowers, forest floor, and stewed plum.

Although it doesn’t possess the sheer opulence of a legendary vintage like 1985, DRC managed to craft a remarkably complex wine that outperforms the standard of the year.

The producers released 8,816 bottles of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Échezeaux in 1981.

A bottle naturally evaporates very slowly through the permeable cork, so we only expect that an old bottle will be less full than a current vintage of the same wine.

This rare bottle remains in appropriate condition for its age.

Given its age and its condition, we offer this bottle principally for its historic interest and its significance as a 1981 vintage wine.

Finally, Arden Fine Wines in London offers the DRC Échézeaux 1981.
