Chateau Musar wine 2003 at Arden Fine Wines

The three varietals – Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Carignan – displayed highly contrasting aromas and were very fragrant.

Reflecting the superb ripeness of the grapes, and the concentration of sugar and acidity that make this harvest unique, the wines achieved a well-balanced and richly-textured profile, with soft tannins.

The wines spent 9 months in cement vats and then a year in French Nevers oak barriques.

The winemakers rested the final blend for another 6 months in vats before bottling it and transferring it to the Chateau Musar cellars high in the mountains at Ghazir to begin its journey of maturation and development.

The aromas are complex and evolving, featuring notes of toasted bread, cigar box, and fresh tea, alongside plums and Eastern spices.

On the palate, there are intense flavours of mature fruits like figs, cherries, and currants, accented by dark chocolate, liquorice, and a hint of game.

Overall, the wine is powerful and big but maintains a cleansing acidity that keeps it fresh on the finish.

How best to enjoy Chateau Musar

Chateau Musar reds, bottled unfined and unfiltered, suit vegans.

Moreover, they also possess a richly-textured quality and are likely “throw a crust” and leave sediment in the bottle.

In fact, most fine wines commonly exhibit this feature, and Musar Red vintages over a decade old especially show it.

Ideally, therefore, you should stand the bottles up the night before opening to allow the sediment to settle.

After that, you should carefully decant and then discard the sediment, usually in the last centimetre of the bottle.

Subsequently, you should allow the wine to breathe for an hour.

Finally, serve it best at 18°C with roasts, grills (especially lamb), casseroles, game, and mature cheeses.
