We present a very rare example of a 19th century vintage of Chateau d’Yquem.
Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Master of Wine, tasted Yquem 1876 in in September 2023:
“The only vintage for which there was no information in the Yquem archives was the 1876.
Consequently, it turned out to be the most mercurial wine of the evening.
Initially, it was disappointingly mute to begin.
It was seemingly dead.
However, many attendees from the Yquem dinner joined our Château Cheval Blanc dinner the next night.
At this dinner, we shared the remainder of the Yquem bottles.
Remarkably, twenty-four hours later the 1876 Yquem was miraculously alive.
Suddenly, it sprang from the glass with the most gorgeous jasmine and chamomile tea perfume.
Furthermore, this led to a delicious crème brûlée undercurrent.
As the 1865 developed over the hours and into the next day, the sweetness emerged.
Ultimately, it revealed a jaw-dropping immortal elixir.”
A short history of Chateau d’Yquem
Chateau d’Yquem in Sauternes was the only wine to be classified as Premier Cru Supérieur in the 1855 classification.
Furthermore, the château has been home to a vineyard since at least 1711, when the estate became fully owned by Léon de Sauvage d’Yquem.
Subsequently, in 1785 it passed to the Lur-Saluces family when Françoise-Joséphine de Sauvage d’Yquem married Count Louis-Amédée de Lur-Saluces.
Notably, their descendants ran the property for over 200 years.
In fact, its wine was already renowned by the eighteenth century.
After centuries of family ownership, d’Yquem was sold to Louis Vuitton-Moët-Hennessy in 2000.
Then, in 2004, Pierre Lurton, MD at Château Cheval Blanc (another LVMH property), took the reins.
On average, only 65,000 bottles are produced each year at Chateau d’Yquem Sauternes.
Moreover, the yield is never more than 900 litres per hectare, compared to the usual 2,000 to 3,000 litres in Sauternes.
Interestingly, the legend is that just one glass of wine is produced from each vine.
