Château Mouton Rothschild – From Marquis to Barons
Château Mouton Rothschild took its present name after Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild acquired it in 1853.
For many years, however, Mouton aroused little interest among its owners.
Moreover, they were unwilling to make the journey to a then-neglected region.
It was a red-letter day when, in 1922, Baron Philippe de Rothschild took in hand the destiny of the estate.
Then, in 1924, Baron Philippe decided to bottle all the wine at the château.
Previously, the merchants took the wine in barrels.
This decision, soon embraced by others, meant that the château had to increase its storage space.
Therefore the architect Charles Siclis designed the spectacular Grand Chai (Great Barrel Hall) at Mouton, which they built in 1926.
1994 red wine gift – Château Mouton Rothschild 1994
Wine enthusiasts highly regard the Château Mouton Rothschild 1994 as a full-bodied Bordeaux red wine from the Pauillac appellation.
They celebrate its complex flavour profile and distinctive artist-designed label.
This 1994 wine is complex and full, with varied notes of blackcurrant liqueur, cherry preserve, leather, cocoa, and humus.
The palate features well-rounded, well-integrated tannins and lively acidity that gives the wine freshness.
The flavours include coffee, smoke, spice, and cinnamon, with a moderately long, fruity finish.
Recent tastings find that the wine has matured beautifully, showing excellent balance and depth, making it an outstanding and complete wine experience.
The 1994 Mouton label was by the Dutch painter Karel Appel (1921-2006).
He was born in Amsterdam and studied there from 1940 to 1943 at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. He had his first show in his native city in 1946.
Karel Appel was the first Dutch painter to illustrate a Chateau Mouton Rothschild label.
For the 1994 Mouton Rothschild vintage he has conceived a pair of drinkers performing a wild dance round a totem bottle, as if to liberate the spirit of the wine still imprisoned within.
