Château Lafite Rothschild history
Lafite Rothschild wine is steeped in a history that started in the 13th century.
In the early 18th century, Nicolas-Marie-Alexandre de Ségur, the Marquis de Ségur, who had inherited the estate, marketed the wines to the nobility of France and across Europe.
When Lafite was introduced to the court of Versailles, demand for the wine reached record heights.
The Marquis de Ségur became known as “The Prince of Vines”.
When Baron James de Rothschild acquired Lafite in 1868, the château, its terroir, and its wines were already storied.
The château earned Premier Grand Cru Classé status in 1855.
150 years ago, Baroness Betty, wife of Baron James, planted the huge oak trees that separate the vineyard from the marshes.
They, their children, and grandchildren, as well as the families of winegrowers who joined them, worked painstakingly to protect this flawless creation bequeathed to them by nature.
The estate has been in the hands of the Rothschilds ever since.
Over the years – which soon became decades, then centuries – following Baron James’ arrival, his children, and their children, and their children in turn, have stewarded the château through both turbulence and accomplishment.
Château Lafite Rothschild vineyard
The vineyard of Château Lafite Rothschild comprises three main areas:
- a collection of vines surrounding Château Lafite Rothschild
- those on the Carruades plain
- a tiny plot in Saint-Estèphe
The surface area is 112 hectares.
The soil is made up of fine, deep gravel mixed with windblown sand on a well-drained, and well exposed tertiary limestone subsoil.
The grape varieties grown here are Cabernet-Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot.
From the phylloxera crisis to the Great Depression, in times of peace and war, Lafite has continued to tell the story of each year, in vintages that offer up their own inimitable testament to the natural world.
Château Lafite Rothschild 1994
The relatively cool spring and rainfall disrupted the flowering of the 1994 vintage.
Consequently, the exceptionally hot summer followed. As a result, excellent weather conditions prevailed during the harvests.
Furthermore, at the beginning of the winemaking process, the grapes displayed stupendous potential after exceptional maceration. In addition, they exhibited a beautiful dark magenta colour.
Moreover, the nose presents notes of vanilla, blackberry, blackcurrant and red rose.
Ultimately, this wine offers a powerful and consistent experience on the palate, providing a concentrated texture with velvety tannins.
Overall, it is a harmonious wine with character.
