Vintage wine 1978 at Arden Fine Wines – Chateau Musar 1978

“A great vintage. I thought it would be special, if quite awkward, but it became great.” – Serge Hochar

The 1978 Château Musar stands out as a classic vintage for this iconic Lebanese winery.

Furthermore, the evolution of 1978 Chateau Musar exemplifies the unpredictable nature of Musar wines.

Initially, from its early days in the cellars, it exhibited a simplistic, almost backward characteristic; however, with time, the wine fleshed out to become what many considered a classic vintage of Chateau Musar.

Additionally, the winemakers fermented the three varietals separately in the winery’s concrete vats.

Notably, they completed fermentation unusually quickly this year, which resulted in wines that were light and delicate in their youth.

Finally, they followed this with 12 months ageing in French oak.

Then, the winemaker blended approximately equal parts of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, and Carignan.

Subsequently, they bottled it in 1981.

When released, the wine presented a bright, deep garnet-red.

Moreover, the nose offered quite an open profile, with notes of roasted spice and cardamom.

Furthermore, the palate showcased great depth and richness, conveying flavours of cassis, caramel, spices, and nutty oak.

Additionally, the winemaker complemented definite but not excessive acidity with firm, dry tannins.

A full-bodied vintage of Chateau Musar; velvety in the mouth with a long, warm finish.

Today, it has a rich garnet to tawny-red colour with significant bricking at the rim.

The nose has highly complex aromas of leather, tobacco, and dried red fruits (cherries, figs), with spice notes like cardamom and cinnamon.

On the palate, it offers a medium body and velvety texture with resolved, silky tannins.

It features flavors of cassis, caramel, and nutty oak, underpinned by the high acidity characteristic of Musar.
