Three families of owners shaped the history of Montrose over two centuries.
On his father’s death, Etienne Théodore Dumoulin discovered the patch of heathland that everyone had forgotten about.
That is when he started the real history of Château Montrose, written by this “land-clearing man.”
He planted the first vines in 1815 and built the necessary buildings for the wine making process.
In 1855, they established Château Montrose as a Second Growth.
Driven by this success, Etienne Théodore Dumoulin never ceased to expand his vineyard.
When he died in 1861, he left his heirs a vineyard of 95 hectares (234 acres), its current size.
The 95-hectare (234-acres) vineyard surrounds the château, the winery, and the outbuildings in a single continuous sweep.
As well as making the vineyard easier to work, this unity means that they can treat it as a single entity.
At Château Montrose, the largest parcel measures two hectares (five acres) and the smallest only a few hundred square metres.
But each parcel has its own personality, its own particular soil or subsoil, and vines whose age, yield, variety or rootstock differ from those of its neighbour.
Château Montrose sits on a very well-drained and ideally exposed gravelly outcrop that runs for over a kilometre along the Gironde estuary.
1974 Château Montrose
The 1974 vintage in Bordeaux presented a difficult challenge, characterised by heavy rains near harvest time.
Consequently, this led to unbalanced wines for many producers.
However, Château Montrose carefully selected a good quality crop from certain vats.
The wine displays a dense ruby colour.
Furthermore, the nose reveals tobacco, smoke, and mirabelle plum.
In addition, the palate offers freshness with good acidity, melted tannins, and a finish of red berries and currants.
Ultimately, the wine presents a supple and harmonious character.
