Quinta de Vargellas
In declared years, Taylor’s vintage blend features a major part of wine from Vargellas.
They bottle it as a Single Quinta in those years when they do not declare a bona fide Taylor’s Vintage.
With the launch of its Quinta de Vargellas 1958, Taylor’s became the first Port house to release a Single Quinta Vintage Port.
In the winery, they treat Vargellas exactly the same as a Vintage Port.
But they age it in bottle at the Quinta for several years before release.
Located in the wild and hilly eastern reaches of the valley, they have prized it as a source of the finest ports since the 1820s.
In 1884, they extended the railway eastwards along the bank of the Douro.
Therefore, this led them to expropriate part of the Vargellas vineyard and in 1886 to construct the Vargellas railway station.
So in the 1970s, the pace of change at Vargellas accelerated.
With the construction of a dam just below the Valeira gorge in 1976, the water level of the Douro rose.
Therefore, it submerged the terraces closest to the river leading to the development of some of the higher parts of the estate.

The Taylor Fladgate Quinta de Vargellas Port 1974 is a single quinta vintage port that is excellent and ready to drink now.
While 1974 was not a widely declared vintage year, the Quinta de Vargellas estate crafted an exceptional vintage port.
Wine enthusiasts highly regard the wine, and it drinks well at nearly 50 years old.
It displays a medium intense colour with a slight orange tinge at the rim.
The nose features notes of wood, anise, and deep berry, with a faint hint of clove.
On the palate, it offers richness with a slight woodiness and flavours of dried fruits like cherry, blackberry, plum, and dates.
Decanting is essential for a vintage port of this age to allow its aromas and flavours to fully open up.
It pairs well with chocolate and caramel desserts.
