Taylor’s Port

The story begins in 1692 when an English merchant named Job Bearsley arrived in Portugal.

Interestingly, little is known about the founder of the firm except that he owned The Ram Inn in London’s Smithfield.

Also, his family owned land in Warwickshire and Staffordshire.

Furthermore, Joseph Taylor gave the firm its current name.

He performed a pivotal role in the company’s history.

In fact, his tenure bridged the gap between the Bearsley era and the arrival of the Yeatmans.

Their descendants own and run the company today.

Ultimately, Taylor’s has established itself as one of the world’s most respected historic wine houses.

The 1924 Port vintage

Almost all the Port houses declared the 1924 vintage.

It was a small vintage.

“Just a notch deeper in colour than the 1912.

The nose presents divine qualities: intense, beautifully defined, very Taylor’s.

The aroma offers quite spicy notes of dried orange peel, cigar box, and a touch of sandalwood.

The perfume gains presence in the glass but after 30 minutes retreats back into its shell.

The palate delivers a full-bodied experience, very concentrated, and more viscous than the 1912.

The tasting reveals notes of ginger, apricot, fig, and liquorice.

The finish delights with a lovely ripe orange-tinged quality that lingers on and on.

It feels very sensuous; the fruit exhibits beautiful poise.”

Serving old Vintage Port

Vintage Port creates a natural deposit in the bottle and you should decant it.

Therefore, stand the bottle upright a few hours before you decant it to allow the sediment to fall to the bottom of the bottle.

Moreover, serve it at 16ºC to 18ºC.

In addition, you should drink Vintage Port one to two days after opening.

Storing old Vintage Port

The bottle should be kept lain down in a cool place, ideally at a temperature below 16ºC.

What to eat with old Vintage Port

Walnuts, blue veined and other richly flavoured cheeses are excellent accompaniments to Vintage Port.

So too are dried fruits such as apricots or figs.
