The 1972 Chateau Musar red wine is a highly-rated, well-aged vintage known for its complexity, rich character, and remarkable longevity.

“One of the greatest years. I don’t recall why, exactly…I discovered the future of Chateau Musar and its formula.

Clive Coates of the Wine Society said our 1970 was very good.

But I think the ‘72 became better. Was this result of gambling or a guessing game? Who can say?…”

– Serge Hochar

Tasting notes

Winemakers made the 1972 Chateau Musar with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, Merlot, and Carignan.

Furthermore, its boldness and generous character won over many, including Serge Hochar himself, who often cited it as one of his favourite vintages.

In addition, the producers shoehorned layers of flavour into a complex package that balances the silken texture and spiced fruit with acidity and elegance.

As it matured and the colour lightened towards garnet and ultimately hints of orange, these characters further integrated, thus giving an intoxicating combination of floral aromas and soft red fruits, along with more tertiary notes of leather and coffee, desiccated fruit, and forest floor.

Moreover, the wine exhibits full-bodied, rich, soft, and savory characteristics with a silky texture.

Critics praise its “perfect ripeness and expressiveness,” noting flavours of quince, fig, and a long finish. Indeed, it has an ethereal quality, reminding some of a great aged Burgundy.

Although the wine is fully mature, it does not show signs of being over-aged; rather, it maintains a surprising freshness and vibrant acidity.

Consequently, experts consider decanting critical for Musar wines to reach their full expression, recommending at least an hour for older vintages.

Finally, as a rare, aged vintage, the 1972 Chateau Musar remains limited in availability.
