Château Mouton Rothschild – From Marquis to Barons
Château Mouton Rothschild took its present name after Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild acquired it from the English branch of the famous dynasty in 1853.
For many years, however, Mouton aroused little interest among its owners.
Moreover, they were unwilling to make the journey to a then-neglected region.
Consequently, it was a red-letter day when, in 1922, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, barely 20 years old and the great-grandson of Baron Nathaniel, took in hand the destiny of the estate.
Then, in 1924, Baron Philippe decided to bottle all the wine at the château.
Hitherto, the merchants took the wine in barrels.
This decision, soon embraced by others, meant that the château had to increase its storage space.
The architect Charles Siclis designed the spectacular Grand Chai (Great Barrel Hall) at Mouton, which they built in 1926.

The 1969 Mouton Rothschild label was by Joan Mirò (1893-1984).
A Catalan by birth, he moved to Paris in 1919.
Subsequently, he was introduced by André Masson to the Surrealists, André Breton welcoming him as a kindred spirit.
Then, in 1924 he found his own style: a world of violent colour, shapes and symbols.
All his work provokes the same basic question: do these worms turning in the womb indicate dark oedipal fantasies?
Or just joyful exuberance in the face of grey everyday reality?
Dominated by a vast, blood-red grape, his label for the 1969 Mouton Rothschild includes a discreet but witty obeisance to the family: the blue and yellow of the Rothschild racing colours.
The wine displays a lovely, mature but lively colour.
It offers a clean nose with vinous warmth, prominent cassis, cedar, and mint notes, which are typical of classic Pauillac wines.
Reviewers have found the palate to be lovely and lively, with good length and cassis flavours.
