1949 red wine for sale – Château Cheval Blanc 1949

The 1949 Château Cheval Blanc is a legendary Bordeaux red wine from the Saint-Émilion appellation, which wine enthusiasts widely consider the final masterpiece in a quartet of exceptional post-war vintages (1945, 1947, 1948, and 1949).

Winemakers produced this wine from a blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot.

It was a severe drought year, resulting in small, highly concentrated berries with exceptional tannic structure.

Unlike the famously “port-like” 1947 vintage, wine critics celebrate the 1949 for its more classical structure, elegance, and balance.

An explosive and complex bouquet features notes of crushed stone, truffle, tobacco, smoke, cherry blossoms, and “Asian spices” like cedar and 5-spice.

Furthermore, this 1949 wine exhibits an unctuously rich and full-bodied texture, balanced by a vibrant acidity that has allowed it to age for over seven decades.

In addition, the finish offers a long and lingering experience, often leaving impressions of salty minerals, dried red fruits, and sweet herbs.

Notably, severe drought conditions marked the 1949 vintage.

Therefore, they concentrated the grapes and allowed them to produce an extraordinary wine.

As a result, as the last of the decade’s trio of great vintages, 1949 epitomises Cheval Blanc’s true essence.

Ultimately, it showcases a remarkable tannic structure and immense aromatic complexity.

This 1949 red wine for sale was highly praised by Master of Wine Peter Richards:

“After 70+ years, the wine exudes elegance and Burgundian character – earthy sappy, forest floor. It showcases tobacco and cedar and fine tannin, still embodying Bordeaux, but with a warming spice and haunting lift and lightness.

The complexity and persistence of the wine affect you on an emotional level. You can’t remain unmoved by a wine like that.

It feels so alive and vibrant. I experienced a great moment in my wine life – undoubtedly one of the very best Bordeaux wines I’ve ever drunk.”
