70-year old Vintage Ports from Arden Fine Wines.
It was a good Bordeaux vintage in 1955 – with Lafite particularly well-regarded – but 70-year olds are much better-off with Vintage Port.
Declared by 26 shippers, this was the largest declaration since 1927. It was the only vintage declared by Taylor’s in the 1950s.
Ronald Symington, one of three brothers then working at the Symington-owned Dow’s and Warre’s, wrote in September 1955:
“We think some very good wines should be made, as the colour generally was good and they were also very nice on the nose and palate.”
It is the finest Port vintage between 1945 and 1963.
Well-cellared examples that have lived in a cool, dark environment, not in the kitchen next to the Aga – like our bottles here – are beautiful drinks.
The ideal way to celebrate a 70th birthday or anniversary (James Dean died in 1955…) – or anything else, really 🍷.
