Château Mouton Rothschild – From Marquis to Barons
Château Mouton Rothschild took its present name after Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild acquired it from the English branch of the famous dynasty in 1853.
For many years, Mouton aroused little interest among its owners.
They were unwilling to make the journey to a then-neglected region.
So it was a red-letter day when, in 1922, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, barely 20 years old and the great-grandson of Baron Nathaniel, took in hand the destiny of the estate.
In 1924, Baron Philippe decided that all the wine should be bottled at the château.
Hitherto, the merchants received the wine in barrels.
This decision, soon embraced by others, meant that the château had to increase its storage space.
The spectacular Grand Chai (Great Barrel Hall) at Mouton, which the architect Charles Siclis designed, was built in 1926.

Jean Hugo (1894-1985), the great-grandson of Victor Hugo, created the 1946 Mouton label.
Furthermore, he became fascinated by theatre design at an early age.
As a result, his sets and costumes for Jean Cocteau’s Les Mariés de la Tour Eiffel made his name in 1921.
Subsequently, Hugo designed productions for Leonide Massine and the Comédie Française.
In addition, he painted oils and watercolours, earning recognition as a master of the miniature.
Moreover, he was a familiar figure at Parisian parties between the wars, devising masks and fancy-dress costumes before later moving to the South of France.
There, he wrote his memoirs, Avant d’oublier (Before I Forget).
Finally, for the 1946 label, Jean Hugo used the story of the Flood: the dove returning to the Ark, a symbol of the first year of peace.”
