Château Lafite Rothschild

Lafite Rothschild wine boasts a rich history that began in the late 17th century when Jacques de Ségur first planted the vineyards.

Furthermore, in the early 18th century Nicolas-Marie-Alexandre de Ségur, the Marquis de Ségur, inherited the estate and marketed the wines to the nobility of France and across Europe.

When he introduced Lafite to the court of Versailles, the demand for the wine soared to record heights.

As a result, people began to know the Marquis de Ségur as “The Prince of Vines.”

Then in 1868, Baron James de Rothschild purchased the Château.

The Rothschild family has owned the estate ever since.

Lafite Rothschild maintains one of the largest vineyard areas in the Médoc.

Its 112 hectares yield about 45,000 cases annually.

Pauillac lies on the left bank of the Gironde estuary, approximately 40km north of Bordeaux.

The estuary’s tempering influence and the diverse soils from both the Massif Central and the Pyrenees create exceptional climatic and geological conditions for producing outstanding wines.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild sits to the north of the Pauillac appellation, bordering Saint Estèphe.

Lafite’s prime terroirs stretch across the 50ha Plateau des Carruades to the west of the Château.

This plateau, the highest point of the Pauillac appellation, drains well and enjoys optimal sun exposure.

Its clay-gravel soils regulate water effectively and provide ideal ripening conditions for the Cabernet Sauvignon.

Some 4.5 hectares planted in the neighboring Saint Estephe appellation contain some of the oldest vines on the property.

These vines consistently produce outstanding quality grapes for the Grand Vin.

Experts do not consider the 1946 vintage in Bordeaux one of the best, especially when they compare it to the exceptional 1945 vintage.

A cold, wet, and rainy start to the growing season caused problems with flowering.

Hot and dry weather in July, August, and September saved the vintage to an extent.

A plague of locusts even affected some vineyards.

The producers harvested a very small yield, and they often created wines that were tough and high in acidity and tannins.

While top estates like Lafite Rothschild can sometimes overcome difficult conditions, the 1946 vintage as a whole is not highly regarded.

Lafite’s reputation for longevity means that some bottles of 1946 have endured well and can continue to evolve.
