Vintage wine 1977 at Arden Fine Wines – Chateau Musar 1977
The 1977 Chateau Musar is a legendary Lebanese red wine.
Winemaker Serge Hochar often cited it as his benchmark for character and complexity.
It was a pivotal year because Hochar finalised the classic “Musar recipe”.
This consisted of roughly equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, and Carignan.
Notably, this specific vintage has a slightly higher proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, giving it a more Bordelais (Bordeaux-like) structure.
Overall, it is a great, complex wine, which with the 1964 was Serge Hochar’s reference for character and complexity.
Now fully mature, the colour has softened to a beautiful light mahogany or garnet with a tawny orange rim.
On the nose, there is an impressive bouquet featuring jasmine, roses, peony, and rich black fruits.
Additionally, you might find evolving notes of leather, sweet cedar, and cigar scent.
The palate is elegant yet firm.
You may also find flavours of wild cherries, cassis, and dark chocolate, balanced by earthy “forest floor” notes and surprising freshness from its acidity.
Although it has aged for nearly 50 years, top bottles like these from Arden Fine Wines still show remarkable vigour.
Given its age, Arden Fine Wines advises you to pour this wine slowly or decant it carefully to separate the heavy sediment that is common in older Musar vintages.
“An important year because I settled on the Chateau Musar recipe: more or less equal quantities of Carignan, Cinsault and Cabernet Sauvignon.” – Serge Hochar
After fermentation under natural yeasts – a key part of Serge’s minimal intervention philosophies – they aged the wines for twelve months in French oak.
They bottled it in the third year after the vintage, then gave it four years bottle age in the Musar cellars at Ghazir.
They released it in 1984.
