Opus One was the first “designer”/”boutique” winery in Napa.
Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild first met in 1983 in Hawaii.
Then eight years later, they met again in Bordeaux.
Thus it took one hour for them to agree to a joint venture in California.
There was dry weather and unseasonably warm temperatures in March 1983.
Therefore this brought the earliest bloom in the history of the Opus One vineyards.
Cooler temperatures during berry set affected flower pollination.
Therefore there were fewer grapes per cluster and the lowest per-acre yield since 1987.
A late-summer hot spell prompted an early and compact harvest for Opus One 1983 that began August 30th and ended October 1st.
Therefore to ensure moderate sugar levels and preserve freshness, the majority of Opus One 1983 fruit was harvested in the cool morning hours before sunrise.
- Showing a lustrous dark ruby, the Opus One 1983 presents aromas of violets, cedar, black tea leaves, black pepper and brioche.
- A soft, creamy entry gives way to a concentrated mid-palate that expands in the mouth and lingers on the finish.
- Elements of cassis, toffee and cocoa round out the rich flavors of the wine.
- Intense fruit, bright acid and sturdy tannins promise resilience and longevity.
