Description

You can find this Fire Horse 1966 wine price at Arden Fine Wines – Château Cheval Blanc 1966.

Since it won its first medal in 1862, Château Cheval Blanc has maintained its place as one of the world’s greatest wines.

In 1832, M. Laussac-Fourcaud bought 15 hectares (37 acres) from Château Figeac.

As a result, they created Chateau Cheval Blanc.

Notably, the International London and Paris Exhibitions in 1862 and 1867 awarded it medals still prominent on its labels.

Furthermore, the family owned the château until 1998, when Bernard Arnault and Albert Frère bought it.

The late Clive Coates MW described Chateau Cheval Blanc as “the only great wine in the world made predominantly from Cabernet Franc.””

The vineyard area is spread over 41 hectares (100 acres), with 37 hectares (91 acres) planted with a composition of grape varieties of:

  • 57% Cabernet Franc
  • 40% Merlot
  • and small parcels of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon

This is an historic vintage of Cheval Blanc because they fermented it for the first time in temperature-controlled concrete vats.

Moreover, the weather during the growing season remained relatively cool and dry – ideal for the slow, complete ripening that Cheval Blanc always seeks.

Ultimately, they marked this as a very fine year.

Critics and users highlight a wine with significant complexity and a classic, savoury profile:

First, the colour shows a deep core with a mature tawny or amber rim.

Then a complex and evolving bouquet features aromas of fireplace/chimney smoke, roasted chestnuts, blackcurrants, raspberries, mushrooms, truffle, cedar, tobacco, and hints of bell pepper or menthol.

The palate presents a medium- to full-bodied, well-balanced experience, with velvety tannins that are often fully resolved.

Then the flavours include dark fruits, liquorice, fine spices, and earthy/mineral notes.

Finally, they note the finish for its long, complex, and dry character.
