Léon de Sauvage d’Yquem fully owned the estate in 1711, making the château home to a vineyard since at least that year.

By the eighteenth century, people already renowned its wine.

In addition, in 1855, the classification made at the request of Emperor Napoléon III designated the estate as the one and only premier cru supérieur.

In the latter half of the 19th century, Yquem experienced a long period of prosperity.

People all over Europe went to great lengths to search out the wine.

In addition, Great Duke Constantine, brother of the Tsar of Russia, made headlines by paying 20,000 gold francs for a barrel of Château d’Yquem – an unheard-of price at the time.

In 2000, Louis Vuitton-Moët-Hennessy bought d’Yquem after centuries of family ownership.

Consequently, in 2004, Pierre Lurton, MD at Château Cheval Blanc (another LVMH property), took the reins.

In addition, on average, the winery produces only 65,000 bottles each year at Chateau d’Yquem Sauternes.

Moreover, the yield never exceeds 900 litres per hectare, compared to the usual 2,000 to 3,000 litres in Sauternes.

The legend claims that just one glass of wine comes from each vine.

Alexandre de Lur-Saluces

In 1966, Bertrand de Lur-Saluces designated one of his brother Amédée’s sons, Alexandre de Lur-Saluces, to take over managing the estate.

The young count did not have an easy time at first.

He had to deal with a series of bad vintages, a profound crisis in the Bordeaux wine trade, and an impressively high inheritance tax that threatened d’Yquem’s survival.

Rigorous management and the excellent 1975 vintage saved the estate, on the heels of three disastrous ones.

The summer weather was mediocre, but autumn improved it.

Farmers worked for 48 days out of 55 to bring in a very worthwhile and slightly above average crop in terms of volume.

The 1966 Château d’Yquem Sauternes produced a very rich vintage.

Award-winning Arden Fine Wines offers this 1966 wine for sale.
