The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC) Échézeaux is a highly sought-after Grand Cru red Burgundy from the historic Échézeaux vineyard.
Made from Pinot Noir, this wine stands out as one of the more powerful and robust offerings from the DRC portfolio while still maintaining a sense of elegance.
The Echézeaux vineyard sits on the slopes above Grands Échezeaux, between the villages of Vosne-Romanée and Vougeot.
The soil in the Échezeaux climats (plots) features a more diverse and complex composition than that of Grands Échezeaux.
It consists of Bajocian marls mixed with gravel and alluvial deposits, exhibiting varying altitudes and gradients.
DRC cultivates approximately 4.67 hectares of the Echézeaux vineyard, which spans a total area of about 37.69 hectares.
The majority of DRC’s holdings focus on a highly regarded plot called Les Poulaillaires.
Wine enthusiasts consider the wines from DRC’s Échezeaux plots exquisite examples of top-tier Burgundy.
They showcase bright red fruit, spice, and savoury characteristics.
DRC Échézeaux 1993
The 1993 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC) Échézeaux Grand Cru is a highly regarded Red Burgundy that currently enjoys its mature drinking window.
Wine experts often call the 1993 vintage in Burgundy “underrated” or a “triumph over nature.”
Despite heavy rains in September, the Pinot Noir grapes developed exceptionally thick skins, resulting in wines with deep colour, high extract, and powerful tannins that have preserved them for the long term.
While typically considered the most accessible and fastest maturing wine in the DRC portfolio, wine enthusiasts note the 1993 DRC Échézeaux for its particularly firm tannic structure and excellent ageing potential that has allowed it to last more than 30 years.
It offers aromas of roses, bright red cherry, and cranberry evolving into deeper tertiary notes of sous bois (forest floor), mushroom, oriental spices (curry, cinnamon), soy sauce, and earth.
On the palate, it presents as medium to full-bodied with a muscular, firm backbone.
It retains significant acidity and concentration and concludes with a persistent finish.
Producers bottled 12,060 bottles of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Échezeaux in 1993.
