The oldest document mentioning Chateau Latour dates from 1331.
It is an authorisation granted to Gaucelme de Castillon by Lord Pons to build a fortified tower in the parish of Saint Maubert.
As a result of successive marriages and inheritances, Château Latour became the property of Alexandre de Ségur.
In 1714, a barrel of Château Latour was worth 4-5 times more than a barrel of typical Bordeaux wine.
As a result of this flourishing trade, the estate gradually came to specialise in wine production, with 38 hectares of vines in 1759 and 47 hectares by 1794.
Latour is made exclusively from “vieilles vignes” (old vines) with an average of 60 years-old in the Enclos, Gravettes, Sarmentier, and Pièce de Château vineyards.
The heart of the Enclos is the only terroir that, every year, can produce the concentration that we expect of Château Latour.
It is here that the Cabernet Sauvignon (accounting for more than 90% of the blend) can achieve optimal expression.
These wines need time – often a decade – before they begin to be ready for drinking.
Latour is also known for having the ability to produce fine wines even in difficult years.
Château Latour 1993
- A mild winter led to an early budbreak of the Merlot around 20 March.
- Full bloom was recorded on I June, corresponding to an advance of about ten days.
- The early summer was rather sullen.
- But August was very hot and sunny, accelerating ripening and thickening the grapes’ skins.
- Green harvests were done from 19 July–10 August.
- Rain arrived on 9 September and showers continued for nearly all of the harvest period 22 September–6 October.
- Fortunately, the grapes’ thick skins were resistant to rot and dilution.
Château Latour 1993 was a satisfactory result despite difficult weather conditions.
It is a complex wine, with aromas of prunes and candied fruit with a hint of Havana tobacco.
On the palate, Château Latour 1993 explodes with freshness and fruit.
While not exceptionally concentrated, Château Latour 1993 is well-balanced with a full, silky structure and a surprisingly long finish.
