Romanée-Saint-Vivant is a Grand Cru vineyard for Pinot Noir red wine in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy.
This vineyard is situated within the commune of Vosne-Romanée.
It takes its name from the Abbey of Saint Vivant, which in Medieval times owned several vineyards among the Vosne-Romanée Grands Crus.
There are several different vineyard owners in Romanée-Saint-Vivant today, although Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is the largest.
- In 1966, the last member of the Marey-Monge family leased the remaining 5.28 hectares to Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.
- Then they gave them an option to be first buyers if the vineyard would come up for sale.
- In 1988, the Neyroud family bought the vineyard, which they had inherited from Ms Marey-Monge.
- Wine from the time when Domaine de la Romanée-Conti leased it, rather than owned it, also has the name Marey-Monge on the label.
The Domaine produces only Grand Cru wines, including this Romanée-Saint-Vivant, made from their 5.28-hectare plot.
DRC Romanée-St-Vivant 1997
Although 1997 was a challenging vintage in Burgundy due to unsettled weather, this wine is considered a success that is drinking beautifully now.
It has a complex bouquet of wild strawberries, raspberries, and dried cherries, layered with autumnal notes of forest floor, moss, and sous bois.
As it is a mature wine, you may also find tertiary scents of leather, cigar boxes, and a distinct “Vosne spice”.
The palate is silky and medium-bodied with a velvet texture.
Then the finish is long and elegant, marked by hints of spice, minerality, and a subtle savoury character.
In 1997, DRC produced, specifically, 9,512 bottles of Romanée-St-Vivant.
