Romanée-Saint-Vivant is a Grand Cru vineyard for Pinot Noir red wine in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy.
This vineyard is situated within the commune of Vosne-Romanée.
It takes its name from the Abbey of Saint Vivant, which in Medieval times owned several vineyards among the Vosne-Romanée Grands Crus.
There are several different vineyard owners in Romanée-Saint-Vivant today, although Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is the largest.
- In 1966, the last member of the Marey-Monge family leased the remaining 5.28 hectares to Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.
- Then they gave them an option to be first buyers if the vineyard would come up for sale.
- In 1988, the Neyroud family bought the vineyard, which they had inherited from Ms Marey-Monge.
- Wine from the time when Domaine de la Romanée-Conti leased it, rather than owned it, also has the name Marey-Monge on the label.
The Domaine produces only Grand Cru wines, including this Romanée-Saint-Vivant, made from their 5.28-hectare plot.
DRC Romanée-St-Vivant 1981
The 1981 growing season in Burgundy was highly challenging.
It was marked by severe spring frosts and uneven weather, resulting in a very small harvest.
Silky, delicate, and lighter-bodied due to the cooler 1981 vintage, DRC Romanée-St-Vivant 1981 has faded berry fruit flavours, earthy undertones, and soft, fully integrated tannins.
DRC bottled their wines barrel-by-barrel until the mid-1980s.
Because of this traditional practice, collectors should expect noticeable variation in freshness and flavour profile between individual bottles of this specific vintage.
In 1981, DRC produced 10,640 bottles of Romanée-St-Vivant.
Counterfeiters frequently target DRC bottles because they have high financial value.
If you are looking to purchase a bottle, ensure you source it through a trusted, premium merchant like Arden Fine Wines.
