Romanée-Saint-Vivant indeed produces Grand Cru Pinot Noir red wine in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy.
Furthermore, the commune of Vosne-Romanée hosts this vineyard.
Additionally, the Abbey of Saint Vivant, which owned several vineyards among the Vosne-Romanée Grands Crus in Medieval times, lends its name to this vineyard.
There are several different vineyard owners in Romanée-Saint-Vivant today, although Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is the largest.
- In 1966, the last member of the Marey-Monge family leased the remaining 5.28 hectares to Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.
- Then they gave them an option to be first buyers if the vineyard would come up for sale.
- In 1988, the Neyroud family bought the vineyard, which they had inherited from Ms Marey-Monge.
- Wine from the time when Domaine de la Romanée-Conti leased it, rather than owned it, also has the name Marey-Monge on the label.
DRC Romanée-St-Vivant 1979
The 1979 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC) Romanée-St-Vivant Grand Cru is a fully mature Burgundy red wine produced from 100% Pinot Noir.
The 1979 growing season suffered from hail in June, resulting in a distinctly small yield.
This specific vintage was never racked during production, helping it retain unique structural integrity.
Today, it has a pale ruby core with strong bricking and a broad garnet/ochre edge due to its extensive age.
The nose showcases prominent spice notes, sous-bois (forest floor), earth, and subtle smoky nuances.
Master of Wine Serena Sutcliffe describes the palate as having a “good meaty taste.”
It offers sappy, resolved, middle-weight flavours with fully integrated tannins.
In 1979, DRC produced 9,120 bottles of Romanée-St-Vivant.
Considering its age and its condition, this bottle serves principally for its historic interest and its significance as a near 50-year old vintage wine.
You can buy this Romanée-St-Vivant 1979 from Arden Fine Wines in London.
