The La Tâche Grand Cru vineyard produces La Tâche from Pinot Noir grapes.
Wine enthusiasts widely praise this red wine for its elegance, complexity, and age-worthiness.
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC) owns the monopole vineyard.
Indeed, wine lovers know La Tâche for its complex and slow-developing flavour profile.
It often requires a decade or more to fully integrate.
Interestingly, the varied soil composition of the vineyard ranges from more stony, limestone-heavy upper slopes to clay-rich lower slopes.
This enables DRC to create a consistent, complex wine.
Moreover, DRC’s traditional, perfectionist winemaking, including late harvesting for optimal ripeness and very low yields, contributes to the wine’s quality.
DRC La Tâche 2002
The 2002 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC) La Tâche Grand Cru Monopole is widely considered an exemplary masterpiece and a legendary expression of Burgundian Pinot Noir.
Sourced entirely from the iconic La Tâche vineyard in Vosne-Romanée, this 2002 vintage blends power, purity, and spectacular complexity.
The nose is highly aromatic and pure, exploding with a kaleidoscope of Asian spices, anise, clove, plum, dark cherries, and crushed red raspberries, all lifted by a distinctive floral character of violets and rose petals.
Although it has developed beautiful tertiary notes of mushroom, truffle, and earth over its years in the bottle, its massive underlying depth and firm tannic structure mean it can easily continue to age for another 20 to 30 years if stored well.
As a result, as a “monopole” (a vineyard owned entirely by one estate), they produce extremely limited quantities.
In conclusion, DRC crafted 17,343 bottles of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 2002.
Would you like to compare this vintage to another great year for La Tâche, such as 1971 or 1978?
