The La Tâche Grand Cru vineyard produces La Tâche from Pinot Noir grapes.

Wine enthusiasts widely praise this red wine for its elegance, complexity, and age-worthiness.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC) owns the monopole vineyard.

Indeed, wine lovers know La Tâche for its complex and slow-developing flavour profile.

It often requires a decade or more to fully integrate.

Interestingly, the varied soil composition of the vineyard ranges from more stony, limestone-heavy upper slopes to clay-rich lower slopes.

This enables DRC to create a consistent, complex wine.

Moreover, DRC’s traditional, perfectionist winemaking, including late harvesting for optimal ripeness and very low yields, contributes to the wine’s quality.

DRC La Tâche 1994

The DRC La Tâche 1994 reflects a notoriously challenging, rain-affected vintage in Burgundy.

Despite the difficult growing season, DRC’s strict quality controls produced a lean, terroir-driven wine that has evolved over three decades.

It is noticeably leaner, fresher, and less voluptuous than typical La Tâche vintages.

The nose features delicate, evolved aromas of sweet red fruits (cherries, strawberries), sous-bois (forest floor), peony rose, licorice, and warm spices like cinnamon.

On the palate, it displays bright acidity, a prominent profile of high-quality new oak, and a more structured, foursquare finish with noticeable tannic grip.

At over 30 years old, this wine is fully mature.

As a result, as a “monopole” (a vineyard owned entirely by one estate), they produce extremely limited quantities.

In conclusion, DRC crafted 18,705 bottles of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 1994.

The 1994 vintage did not reach the staggering, opulent heights of greater La Tâche years, but it remains a fascinating bottle.

Would you like to compare this vintage to another great year for La Tâche, such as 1971 or 1978?
