The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC) produces the highly sought-after Grand Cru red Burgundy, Grands Échézeaux.
The DRC Grands Échézeaux vineyard is a 3.53-hectare parcel.
You can expect typical aromas of red and black fruits, such as cherries and raspberries, along with floral notes, earth, and spices.
As the wine ages, it evolves into more complex notes of musk, leather, fur, and mushroom.
The wine presents a harmonious balance of fruit, acidity, and refined tannins.
Wines from Grands Échézeaux typically command a higher price and exhibit greater complexity and structure.
In comparison to DRC’s Échezeaux cuvée, the wine from DRC Grands Échézeaux generally presents more complexity and harmony.
DRC Grands Échézeaux showcases extraordinary ageing potential, requiring you to wait at least four to five years.
DRC Grands Échézeaux 2004
At over 20 years old, this wine has entered its tertiary phase and requires drinkers to approach it with realistic expectations regarding its age.
It has a complex bouquet of wild strawberry, dried orange peel, autumn leaves, and sandalwood.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied and silky with soft tannins and vibrant acidity.
Additionally, it features a savoury finish with hints of black cherry and spice.
Overall, DRC created 16,593 bottles of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands Échézeaux in 2004.
As a result, this vintage is very scarce now.

DRC Grands Échezeaux 2004 tasted by Allen Meadows / Burghound
In contrast to the expressive spiciness of the Echézeaux, this is a clear notch up in elegance.
It is clearly finer with an ultra high-toned floral and spice-infused nose that is almost completely closed-in.
Though this may be due to a subtle touch of reduction and I would suggest decanting this if you’re going to try a bottle young.
The linear and ultra pure medium full flavors trade more on finesse and refinement than what is usually a relatively powerful and muscular wine.
This isn’t a big wine but the superb detail and unmatched precision are stunning.
But be aware that it will be a wine for the patient as this is very understated at present and will very definitely require at least a decade of cellar time to really open up.
Score: 91.
