The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC) Grands Échézeaux is a highly sought-after Grand Cru red Burgundy.
The Grands Échezeaux vineyard produces is a 3.53-hectare parcel.
You can expect typical aromas of red and black fruits, such as cherries and raspberries, along with floral notes, earth, and spices.
As the wine ages, it evolves into more complex notes of musk, leather, fur, and mushroom.
The wine presents a harmonious balance of fruit, acidity, and refined tannins.
Wines from Grands Échezeaux typically command a higher price and exhibit greater complexity and structure.
In comparison to DRC’s Échezeaux cuvée, the wine from Grands Échezeaux generally presents more complexity and harmony.
DRC Grands Échezeaux showcases extraordinary ageing potential, requiring you to wait at least four to five years.
DRC Grands Échezeaux 1967
The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC) Grands Échezeaux 1967 represents an extremely rare and mature red Burgundy wine.
Producers still made respectable wines from the 1967 red Burgundy vintage, which many considered less successful than other years.
A heavy frost in early May limited the overall crop size.
July and August brought very warm weather, which normally helps with ripening the grapes.
Cold, damp weather in the first three weeks of September reversed these conditions and proved challenging for the Pinot Noir grapes.
The harvest began in October after the weather improved, but earlier rains impacted the red wines.
Top estates like DRC produced more structured wines that may have held up over time.
A note from a 2018 tasting describes an elegant wine with “fruit sweetness, berry and a touch of tea leaf.”
A 2013 tasting at the Domaine found a sound, mature wine with notes of truffle, though it faded.
A reviewer on CellarTracker described it as having “a caramel centre with fruit around edges.”
A well-preserved bottle may still show elegance and sweetness.
In 1967, the winery produced 10,774 bottles of DRC Grands Échezeaux.
