The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC) Échézeaux attracts many wine enthusiasts as a highly sought-after Grand Cru red Burgundy from the historic Échézeaux vineyard.

This wine, made from Pinot Noir, stands out as one of the more powerful and robust offerings from the DRC portfolio.

However, it still maintains a sense of elegance.

The Echézeaux vineyard sits on the slopes above Grands Échezeaux, specifically between the villages of Vosne-Romanée and Vougeot.

The soil in the Échezeaux climats (plots) features a more diverse and complex composition than that of Grands Échezeaux.

It consists of Bajocian marls mixed with gravel and alluvial deposits, exhibiting varying altitudes and gradients.

DRC cultivates approximately 4.67 hectares of the Echézeaux vineyard, which spans a total area of about 37.69 hectares.

The majority of DRC’s holdings focus on a highly regarded plot called Les Poulaillaires.

Wine enthusiasts consider the wines from DRC’s Échezeaux plots exquisite examples of top-tier Burgundy.

They showcase bright red fruit, spice, and savoury characteristics.

DRC Échézeaux 1987

Despite 1987 being a challenging, cooler vintage across the Côte de Nuits, DRC’s strict selection yielded an exciting, flattering, and precocious wine with rich plum-like fruit profiles and excellent depth.

Its sister bottling, the 1987 Grands Échézeaux, offers slightly more richness and fullness.

However, Échézeaux holds its own with exceptional aromatic complexity driven by DRC’s signature whole-cluster fermentation and 100% new oak aging.

Expect a silky mouthfeel, integrated earthiness, and mature red fruit notes.

The producers released 8,456 bottles of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Échezeaux in 1987.

A bottle naturally evaporates very slowly through the permeable cork, so we only expect that an old bottle will be less full than a current vintage of the same wine.

This rare bottle remains in appropriate condition for its age.
