Château Latour is made exclusively from “vieilles vignes” (old vines) with an average of 60 years-old in the “Enclos”.
The heart of the Enclos is the only terroir that, every year, can produce the depth, elegance and concentration that we expect of Château Latour.
It is here that the Cabernet Sauvignon (accounting for more than 90% of the blend) can achieve optimal expression.
- After a very cold January (-15° C on 18 January), the vines had to endure a prolonged period of frost.
- Then a very sunny May resulted in superb growth.
- Unfortunately, a rainy and overcast June disrupted flowering, resulting in some flower abortion and uneven grape size.
- Subsequently, flowering was very long, continuing from 3 May–29 June.
- Then the second half of July set new records for cold temperatures and rain.
- August was satisfactory but early September was wet.
- From 8 to 19 September late maturing bunches and those with uneven grape size were removed from the vines to improve the quality of the harvest.
- Finally, the harvest took place from 30 September–17 October in the rain.
- Ripeness was satisfactory.
The weather conditions for the Château Latour 1987 vintage resulted in a strict selection of the wines being necessary.
Some vats were downgraded to generic Pauillac.
Château Latour 1987 was light, evolved, yet elegant and with no greenness.
It developed aromas of liquorice, tobacco and coffee.
