The oldest document mentioning Chateau Latour dates from 1331.
It is an authorisation granted to Gaucelme de Castillon by Lord Pons to build a fortified tower in the parish of Saint Maubert.
As a result of successive marriages and inheritances, Château Latour became the property of Alexandre de Ségur.
In 1714, a barrel of Château Latour was worth 4-5 times more than a barrel of typical Bordeaux wine.
By 1729, the ratio had risen to thirteen and by 1767 to twenty.
As a result of this flourishing trade, the estate gradually came to specialise in wine production.
Therefore it had 38 hectares of vines in 1759 and 47 hectares by 1794.
Château Latour is made exclusively from “vieilles vignes” (old vines) with an average of 60 years-old in the Enclos, Gravettes, Sarmentier, and Pièce de Château vineyards.
The heart of the Enclos is the only terroir that, every year, can produce the depth, elegance and concentration that we expect of Château Latour.
These wines need time – often a decade – before they begin to be ready for drinking.
Château Latour is also known for having the ability to produce fine wines even in difficult years.
THE 2000 VINTAGE AT CHATEAU LATOUR
Flowering took place in a mild, wet spring.
However, damage caused by mildew was accompanied by some outbreaks of flower abortion and uneven grape size.
Fortunately, weather conditions greatly improved in June.
Although the rainfall remained below seasonal norms, it helped in stopping the development of the mildew in the spring.
Moreover, the fine weather that followed in July and August allowed the grapes to achieve a rare complexity.
Additionally, the maximum temperatures remained conducive to gradual ripening.
Similarly, September continued in much the same way as August, and improved the conditions for ripening.
Consequently, on 19 September, 35 mm of rain washed the grapes of any impurities before the harvests.
Finally, these began with the Merlot in the Enclos on 22 September and ended on 1 October.
Château Latour 2000 has an impressively deep, dark colour.
The wine has a powerful, balanced structure.
The dense structures and the qualities of the tannins may be superior to those of Château Latour 1996 and Château Latour 1990.
The balance of Château Latour 2000 combines class, rigour, complexity, and great finesse in the fruit.
A great vintage of Château Latour.
