The oldest document mentioning Chateau Latour dates from 1331.
It is an authorisation granted to Gaucelme de Castillon by Lord Pons to build a fortified tower in the parish of Saint Maubert.
As a result of successive marriages and inheritances, Château Latour became the property of Alexandre de Ségur.
In 1714, a barrel of Château Latour was worth 4-5 times more than a barrel of typical Bordeaux wine.
By 1729, the ratio had risen to thirteen and by 1767 to twenty.
Château Latour exclusively makes wine from “vieilles vignes” (old vines) with an average of 60 years-old in the Enclos vineyard.
The only terroir that produces the depth, elegance, and concentration we expect of Château Latour every year is the heart of the Enclos.
Here, the Cabernet Sauvignon (accounting for more than 90% of the blend) achieves optimal expression in terms of colour, richness, and freshness.
These wines need time – often a decade – before they become ready for drinking.
Château Latour is also known for its ability to produce fine wines even in difficult years.
1947 Château Latour – Wine for 79th birthday
The producers at Château Latour declared 1947 a very good year both in terms of quantity and quality.
But they also faced a year in which diseases caused significant damage.
In the end, they obtained very ripe grapes, with very high levels of sugar and low acidity, resulting in a delicate vinification.
Château Latour 1947 aged quickly but it has remained drinkable for a long time.
The colour has still not evolved too much.
The bouquet offers notes of tar and chocolate, with good structure and fine balance maintained by excellent acidity.
Wine for 79th birthday – award-winning Arden Fine Wines in London offers Château Latour 1947.
