Wine enthusiasts widely recognise the 1966 vintage as an outstanding and long-lasting year for Port.

Experts often consider it a top post-war vintage, producing balanced and elegant wines that rival the more famous 1963 vintage.

After decades of bottle ageing, the 1966 vintage ports have developed notable complexity while retaining their structure.

Caves Messias produced the highly regarded Vintage Port, Quinta do Cachão 1966.

Messias Baptista founded the renowned Portuguese wine producer, Caves Messias, in 1926.

The company is based in Mealhada (Bairrada region).

The founding family’s descendants manage the company.

Quinta do Cachão sits at the bank of the Douro river in the Cima Corgo, which is the most inhospitable, ancient, deep, and beautiful region to which the river lends its name.

Barão do Seixo first planted this vineyard in 1845, and later, Afonso Cabral’s family acquired it, which in turn sold it to Messias in 1956.

To increase its production, Messias acquired a border property, Quinta do Rei, owned by Gonzalez Byass in 1958.

Wine experts generally consider the 1966 vintage year excellent for Port wines.

This vintage 1966 wine, therefore, displays a yellow tawny colour, with notes of caramel and nuts on the nose.

Additionally, it has a medium body, with a mature and old flavour profile that is both elegant and complex, accompanied by an attractive and good finish.

This 1966 wine offers an intense aroma of sandalwood and spices; consequently, it shows complexity in the mouth with a long finish.

As a mature Vintage Port, you should decant it to remove the natural sediment before serving.

Moreover, you should ideally serve it slightly below room temperature, and it pairs well with mature cheeses, roasted nuts, or dark chocolate.

Finally, you can purchase this 60-year-old wine at Arden Fine Wines.
