Since it won its first medal in 1862, Château Cheval Blanc has maintained its place as one of the world’s greatest wines.

In 1832, Château Figeac sold 15 hectares (37 acres) to M. Laussac-Fourcaud.

As a result, this became Chateau Cheval Blanc.

Notably, in the International London and Paris Exhibitions in 1862 and 1867, it won medals still prominent on its labels.

Furthermore, the château remained in the family until 1998, when it was sold to Bernard Arnault and Albert Frère.

The late Clive Coates MW described Chateau Cheval Blanc as “the only great wine in the world made predominantly from Cabernet Franc.””

The vineyard area is spread over 41 hectares (100 acres), with 37 hectares (91 acres) planted with a composition of grape varieties of:

  • 57% Cabernet Franc
  • 40% Merlot
  • and small parcels of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon

50th birthday wine – Château Cheval Blanc 1976

The 1976 vintage was fairly warm and early-maturing.

However, rain in August and September reduced a promising potential.

Consequently, the grapes were very ripe, conferring a delicious impression of sweetness to Château Cheval Blanc 1976.

In particular,  expect ripe plum, violet, sweet spices, and savoury notes, with developed aromas of fur, cedar, tobacco, and toasty oak.

Overall, Château Cheval Blanc 1976 is delicious, with smooth tannin, and has stayed amazingly young.

Moreover, the aftertaste is fresh, elegant, and very long.

Although the wine has matured rather quickly, it is beautifully smooth and, therefore, there is no point in waiting any longer to drink it.

The 1976 Cheval Blanc is a well-aged, complex wine from a unique vintage, offering a delightful combination of ripe fruit, earthy undertones, and classic Bordeaux structure, best enjoyed now for its developed character.

You can find Château Cheval Blanc 1976 for sale at Arden Fine Wines, a perfect wine for 50th birthday celebration.
