Description

1961 Bordeaux vintage – Château Cheval Blanc 1961 for sale at award-winning Arden Fine Wines in London.

Since it won its first medal in 1862, Château Cheval Blanc has maintained its place as one of the world’s greatest wines.

In 1832, M. Laussac-Fourcaud bought 15 hectares (37 acres) from Château Figeac.

As a result, they created Chateau Cheval Blanc.

Notably, the International London and Paris Exhibitions in 1862 and 1867 awarded it medals still prominent on its labels.

Furthermore, the family owned the château until 1998, when Bernard Arnault and Albert Frère bought it.

The late Clive Coates MW described Chateau Cheval Blanc as “the only great wine in the world made predominantly from Cabernet Franc.””

The vineyard area is spread over 41 hectares (100 acres), with 37 hectares (91 acres) planted with a composition of grape varieties of:

  • 57% Cabernet Franc
  • 40% Merlot
  • and small parcels of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon

1961 Bordeaux vintage – Château Cheval Blanc 1961

Château Cheval Blanc 1961 stands out as a highly regarded vintage wine from the Saint-Émilion region of Bordeaux.

While the 1947 vintage enjoys legendary status, wine enthusiasts know the 1961 for its exceptional concentration and elegance.

Moreover, this quality arises from a small crop with perfect ripening conditions.

Specifically, the frost on the 29th of May reduced the crop to just 11 hectolitres per hectare.

Then, subsequently, beautiful dry summer weather ripened the grapes to perfection.

As a result, they began the harvest on 18th September 1961 and finished on the 27th of the same month.

Notably, they recorded yields of just 11 hectolitres per hectare.

In total, they produced only 160 barrels.

Consequently, Château Cheval Blanc acquired new barrels for this outstanding vintage, which was very rare at the time.

In addition, the degree of alcohol measures 12.5%.

Overall, Château Cheval Blanc 1961 impresses with its concentration and class, showcasing superb tannin.

Furthermore, this very elegant wine offers infinite length of flavour…
