Château Latour exclusively uses “vieilles vignes” (old vines).
These vines have an average of 60 years-old in the “Enclos”, which contains the Gravettes, Sarmentier, and Pièce de Château vineyards.
The heart of the Enclos is the only terroir that, every year, produces the concentration that we expect of Château Latour.
Here, the Cabernet Sauvignon (accounting for more than 90% of the blend) achieves optimal expression.

- A mild, wet winter led to a fairly early budbreak at Latour, specifically on 23 March for the Merlot and 2 April for the Cabernet Sauvignon.
- Subsequently, after three weeks of cool weather in early May, a warm period from the 23rd caused an explosion in growth.
- Moreover, flowering began on 28 May.
- However, the older Merlot vines in the Enclos vineyard experienced some flower abortion.
- Additionally, June and July brought hot and humid weather.
- Although thunderstorms continued in August, Latour experienced only 67 mm of rain.
- Furthermore, a period of fine weather occurred in late August with three hot, dry weeks.
- Consequently, easterly winds concentrated the effect on the grapes, and cool nights enabled gradual ripening in typical ocean climate conditions.
- Lastly, several storms slightly disrupted the harvests, which took place from 17 September to 2 October.
- The grapes were perfect, very ripe and perfectly balanced, comparable to 1990.
Château Latour 1996 is a little austere at first compared to the previous vintage.
The concentration of Château Latour 1996 then takes on a delightfully rich aspect.
It combines a surprisingly classic, balanced, solid tannic structure that has perfect, plump tannins.
Château Latour 1996 is a wine that will keep for a very long time…
