Since it won its first medal in 1862, Château Cheval Blanc has maintained its place as one of the world’s greatest wines.

In 1832, Château Figeac sold 15 hectares (37 acres) to M. Laussac-Fourcaud.

As a result, this became Chateau Cheval Blanc.

Notably, in the International London and Paris Exhibitions in 1862 and 1867, it won medals still prominent on its labels.

Furthermore, the family kept the château until 1998, when Bernard Arnault and Albert Frère bought it.

The late Clive Coates MW described Chateau Cheval Blanc as “the only great wine in the world made predominantly from Cabernet Franc.”

The vineyard area spans 41 hectares (100 acres), with 37 hectares (91 acres) planted with a composition of grape varieties of:

  • 57% Cabernet Franc
  • 40% Merlot
  • and small parcels of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon

The fine 1995 vintage was a relief after four difficult years.

The elements frustrated the best efforts of man to do more than make something serviceable from 1991 to 1994.

Starting with the great frost of 1991, rain then hampered each subsequent vintage.

Pierre Lurton took over at Cheval Blanc in 1991.

He said that after four problem vintages, he began to wonder when he would get a chance to make a great Cheval.

The wines from 1995 are richer but more chunky, and with less elegance than 1996.

Overall, the wines from the Right Bank have come through better than those from the Left Bank.

This is a very good vintage of Cheval Blanc, with great balance and a complex, delicious flavour that still needs time to reach its peak.
