Château Mouton Rothschild – From Marquis to Barons

Château Mouton Rothschild took its present name after Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild acquired it in 1853.

For many years, however, Mouton aroused little interest among its owners.

Moreover, they were unwilling to make the journey to a then-neglected region.

It was a red-letter day when, in 1922, Baron Philippe de Rothschild took in hand the destiny of the estate.

Then, in 1924, Baron Philippe decided to bottle all the wine at the château.

Previously, the merchants took the wine in barrels.

This decision, soon embraced by others, meant that the château had to increase its storage space.

Therefore the architect Charles Siclis designed the spectacular Grand Chai (Great Barrel Hall) at Mouton, which they built in 1926.

1984 red wine gift – Château Mouton Rothschild 1984

The Château Mouton Rothschild 1984 is a a light to medium-bodied, mature Bordeaux red wine from a challenging vintage, noted for its elegant label by artist Yaacov Agam and its expression of savoury, earthy notes.

The wine offers a refined and elegant bouquet, with primary aromas of coffee, liquorice, and red fruits, underpinned by notes of pleasant oak.

The palate is light to medium-bodied, with soft, resolved tannins.

The fruit flavours are earthy and savoury.

The finish has lingering earthy and leathery notes.

The 1984 Mouton label was by Yaacov Agam (1928–).

He was born in Israel, the son of a rabbi, and moved to Paris in 1951.

His design for the label of Mouton Rothschild 1984, while faithful to the painter’s colours, only gives a partial idea of how it should look: perhaps the wine and the heightened perception of the drinker can provide the missing movement.
